Foursquare Review

I started playing foursquare about month ago and I think its much more fun then checking in at Facebook places.  Foursquare took the Facebook places idea and make it a game earning points, badges and making checking in quick and fast.  The badges are a lot of fun to try an acquire by checking in to unlock.  Earning points for different types of check ins and being the mayor of an establishment makes every post exciting.  Some businesses have even started to offer specials for people who checkin making insensitive for players of Foursquare to return to there establishments. I find this location based game a lot of fun and enjoyable the game is very easy to get friends hooked on.

Verisign Admits being hacked in 2010

Verisign admits that they were hacked in 2010 on several occasions.   The attacks are serious because data stolen from Verisign could allow attackers to intercept unencrypted communications and redirect traffic web traffic.  Verisign be leaves there DNS was compromised and not there certificate arm which Verisign has become famous with over the years.  In 2010 Symantec purchased Verisign for 1.3 Billions.  This is again another blow to Symantec in the sting of bad PR over the last few weeks.

Windows 8 Server uses Minimal Server Interface

The minimal server interface sound like a good idea the though of not having IE and minimal GUI Shells sound less resource intensive and more secure.  This is something done on Linux servers depending on what they need to do sometimes the GUI is loaded sometimes they do not load GUI depends on circumstances.  A GUI-Less OS is better the GUI takes up resources and if you are running older hardware this can make be the difference between good or bad performance.  Windows server 2008 has an option to load just the command line OS most users just choose to take the easy way and load the GUI.  I myself use the GUI on most servers but then I have to make a read only DC on old hardware I load 2008 without GUI.  All depends on the environment you are working with and what you are comfortable with handling.  I like how Microsoft seems to be going with this instead of no GUI a minimal Server interface could be a happy median between usability and performance.

Anonymous Not Attacking Facebook on January 28

Anonymous said yesterday on there office Twitter Page

https://twitter.com/#!/anonops/status/161535637542019072

“Again we must say that we will not attack #Facebook! Again the mass media lie.”

A lot of sources are claiming that the video is fake and Anonymous has nothing to gain by attacking Facebook.  Not to mention there was a similar threat that never happened on November 5, 2011.  I am sure Facebook is prepared and taking proper precautions just in case something should happen.

Google Focus On the User

Facebook, Twitter and Myspace developers create  a video and released it on new web site called

http://www.focusontheuser.org

The video is a proof of concept showing how Google’s new search algorithm puts Google+ first over all other social networks.  The video asks Google not to be evil and focus on the user experience.  Google’s new feature  Search plus Your World should surface results from all social networks not just Google+.  A lot of people have mixed feelings about this considering Google is running a business not a public service which means they have every right to index there own information first over everyone.

Anonymous Hacks CBS and Universal Music

Anonymous apparently had a round 2 over the weekend.  The hacker group took down CBS.com and again took down Universal Music.  CBS.com did not get taken down by DDOS attack but rather users got redirected to servers that showed a directory file and error messages when trying to load pages.  Universal Music got taken down along with affiliated company websites.  The group has been on a hacking spree in retaliation to the MegaUpload take down last week.

Anonymous Retaliates To MegaUpload Takedown

The FBI shutdown the file sharing site MegaUpload yesterday and charged the owner with piracy.  MegaUpload was responsible for over 4% of the illegal internet traffic.  In retaliation of MegaUpload being taken down Anonymous took down 4 websites simultaneously Department of Justice, Motion Picture Association of America, Recording Industry Association of America and Universal Music Group.  Fifteen Minutes after the announcement of MegaUpload being taken down Anonymous Tweet they had taken a strike against the act.

Remove Windows 7 Antivirus 2012

This has been quite the popular virus over last few weeks.  I found this web site to help me remove this annoying virus.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-antispyware-2012

The one addendum I have found is on Windows 32 bit computers you need to run Rootkit Buster the virus imbeds itself into the Master Boot Record and the virus will keep redirecting you and delete your windows update server.  If Rootkit Buster does not work try this manual procedure.

  1. Boot Off Windows Recovery CD
  2. Hit R get to recovery mode
  3. Pick the right partition
  4. Type FIXMBR
  5. hit y to comfirm
  6. reboot

Next I reinstalled Windows Update Service by using this procedure

http://helixzone.net/blog/2011/05/19/reinstall-windows-update-service/

Then I ran Windows Update and Updated there virus protection to make sure the virus did not return.
